This is a great little project to practice log cabin quilt blocks and would make a lovely gift. (This tutorial has been updated)
You will need:
3 animals of your choice from Sea Parrot fabric strips (Here I used dragonflies)
A selection of fabrics for the log cabin strips (Here I used my River collection)
Fabric for the sashing (border)
Batting/wadding
Fabric for the back
Bias binding or homemade binding
1. Cut the three animal patches into approximately 4 inch squares using the marks to help you. Then cut the squares accurately into 3 1/2 inch squares, making sure that the motif is in the middle. Fabric is flexible and so the printing my not be uniform.

2. Cut a selection of the log cabin fabrics (here the River collection) into strips 1 1/4 inch wide. If the fabric has direction, cut some horizontally and some vertically. You will see why later.
3. Take one square and one strip. Cut the strip just wider than the top side of the square. If the design on the fabric strip has direction (like the reed mace here), make sure that it is in the correct orientation. Pin the strip and square right sides together and sew them together with a 1/4 inch seam. Because the pieces are so small, I think it is a good idea to back stitch at the beginning and end to make the sewing secure.

4. Press the seam away from the central square, remembering to place a clean cotton cloth between the iron and patchwork when ironing on the top.
5. Trim the excess strip fabric to the same size as the square.
6. Take another strip and cut it just longer than the right-hand side of the square and strip. Pin the strip to the patchwork, right sides together, and sew as before.

7. Press the seam away from the central square.
8. Trim the excess strip fabric to the same size as the square and other sewn strip.
9. Repeat this process for the bottom of the square.

10. Repeat the process for the left hand side.

11. Trim off the excess strip fabric
12. Then start at the top again for the next round.

13. Now start at the top again on the third round.

14. Repeat for the other two squares.

15. Arrange the blocks as you wish.
16. Cut strips of the sashing fabric. I used strips that are 1 3/4 inches wide.
17. Take the top block and then cut two strips just longer that each side.
18. Pin the strips to each side of the block, right sides together, and then sew with a 1/4 inch seam.
19. Press the seams away from the block. Trim the fabric strip to the same height as the block.
20. Take two more strips and cut them just longer than the top and bottom of the block and sewn strips.
21. Press the seams away from the block.
22. Repeat the process for the other two blocks but only sew sashing on on three sides (sides and bottom), as below.

23. Sew the three blocks together and trim off any excess fabric.

24. Pin and then tack the blocks (topper) to the wadding and backing fabric (see my previous blogs for further help).

25. Now quilt! I hand-quilted mine. I quilted around the dragonflies first.
and then quilted two lines in each strip.
26. All you need to do now is add the binding (see my tutorial) and a loop or hanging sleeve, and you are finished.
So now you know how to make a log cabin block, you could easily make a whole quilt next time!
